Crews from several neighboring departments responded to the fire at 4 Mann Street in Hingham around 12:50 p.m. on Monday, July 11, the Hingham Fire Department said.
Upon arrival, crews found large amounts of smoking coming from the 6,000-square-foot home and it was dubbed a total loss. According to a listing on Zillow, the house was sold for $3.2 million on June 10.
Firefighters initially had trouble putting out the flames due to the house being at the top of a hill and having to stretch additional hoses to get enough water on the blaze.
In addition, high winds sent hot ambers flying onto four nearby homes, the department said. Several homes were evacuated as a result.
Video footage captured smoke that was visible to neighbors as the flames spread to other nearby buildings.
The home in which it started eventually collapsed, with nothing but the house's chimney left standing.
Three people who were inside a neighboring house that also caught fire managed to get out safely. They, along with the homeowners of 4 Mann Street, will be displaced. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Residents can expect temporary discolored water as a result of the fire. Residents are also being advised to water down mulch beds on their properties if they live in the area.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
